Transgender women will be allowed to compete in next year's Miss Universe contest after the US-based organisation decided that Jenna Talackova, who had a sex change four years ago, could take part.

Ms Talackova was initially disqualified from this year's 61st Miss Universe Canada pageant, in May. "I am a woman," Ms Talackova said last week. "I was devastated, and I felt that excluding me for the reason that they gave was unjust."
