Two New York City police officers shot and wounded in the Bronx
The wounds of both officers are reportedly not life threatening
Two on-duty New York City police officers have been shot and wounded after responding to a robbery in the Bronx, police have said.
The shooting occurred just after 10.30pm on East 184th Street. The wounds of both officers are reportedly not life threatening, however both were undergoing surgery at St. Barnabas hospital.
One officer was reportedly shot in the arm and the other was struck in the back, police said. Deputy Chief Kim Royster said that neither officer was targeted deliberately by the gunman.
Just weeks ago officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were ambushed and fatally shot in an "execution-style" attack whilst in their patrol car on 20 December by a lone gunman.
Thousands of officers from around the country attended the funerals.
Tension between officers and the city’s civilian leadership has increased following the killing of Mr Liu,32, and Mr Ramos, 40. The gunman, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, fled the scene and shot himself on a subway platform shortly afterwards.
At the funeral of Officer Ramos, many officers turned their backs when Mayor de Blasio spoke. The head of one of the police union’s claimed that Mr de Blasio had "blood on his hands".
New York City mayor Bill De Blasio scolded what he called the 'world's greatest police department' for being 'disrespectful' following the protests. Police commissioner Bill Bratton said that those involved had "embarrassed themselves" during a joint news conference held at police headquarters.
"Those individuals who took certain actions the last two weeks, they were disrespectful to the families involved. That’s the bottom line," De Blasio said. "They were disrespectful to the families who lost their loved ones."
