A British runner who was taking part in the Boston Marathon has described the moment heard the bombs explode.

Firefighter Jeremy Hughes from Yorkshire was near the blast site and said: 'It was just a big boom. Just a very loud explosion. Imagine the loudest firework you've ever heard and times it by 10.'

Hughes' wife and son had travelled to America to watch him take part in the event and were near the blast site, they were planning on meeting near the finish line but luckily changed their location.

Hughes finished the race half an hour before the explosion and added: 'If I had been any slower [...] it might have been a more tragic story from a personal point of view'.
