Woman sues transgender daughter for undergoing gender reassignment

A woman is suing her transgender teenage daughter for having gender reassignment surgery, it has been reported.

Anmarie Calgaro, from Minnesota, filed a lawsuit against her 17-year-old daughter along with health officials and a school district, NBC reports. The legal action is reportedly being represented by the religious group Thomas More Society which has previously prosecuted in anti-abortion cases.

Ms Calgaro held a press conference streamed on Facebook announcing her decision, during which time she misgendered her daughter who identifies as female. She told reporters: “It was brought to my knowledge that my son began receiving hormone replacement treatments… to transition from male to female, with medical assistance paying for this. I was not consulted or informed about this in anyway.

“As a mother, I know his emotional and physical needs in a way no one else can. I also have a commitment to him that no-one else has. I feel that not only was I robbed of the opportunity to help and guide my son make good decisions but I also feel he was robbed of a key advocate in his decisions- his mother.

“I’m taking this action in the benefit of all parents and families who may be facing the same violation of their rights, so that they and others in the future may be spared the same tragic events.”

Ms Calgaro’s attorney told reporters that her daughter has been emancipated since she turned 15. Under Minnesota laws, there is no formal process for the emancipation of minors, however when juveniles live apart from the parental home they are considered entitled to make their own decisions regarding consent for medical procedures.

An emancipation notice filed with local officials states that her daughter had been living separately for two years at a different address from her but Ms Calgaro had made no attempt to encourage her daughter to return home, report her as a runaway or take legal action for her return.

Alongside the complaint, a doctor’s letter was also reportedly filed stating Ms Calgaro’s daughter has undergone gender reassignment and should be issued with new documentation with new gender markers recognising this.
