Rob Ford just can't help himself, it would seem. It's another day and we have another tidbit of controversy from the Toronto Mayor.

After being filmed smoking crack - then denying the video ever existed before admitting it did - and being seen in another video wildly threatening to murder someone, Ford has given radio listeners some controversial Christmas gift-giving advice.

When asked on a radio phone-in what he was going to buy his wife Renata, he replied: "Just money. Women love money. Give them a couple of thousand bucks and they're happy. Get some treats on the side obviously for her.

"At the end of the day," he concluded, "she wants her cash. So I give her a nice cheque and we're all happy."

When asked what he hoped his wife might get him for Christmas, Ford said: "She always surprises me. I have a fantastic wife."

According to CBC News Toronto, Ford was speaking on his regular phone-in chat on Sports Junkies, on 106.7 The Fan, based in Washington, D.C.

Since the crack episode, which Ford attributed to being in a drunken stupor, the Toronto council moved to strip him of most of his powers. He refused to resign.

And earlier this week he apologised for claiming Canadian reporter Daniel Dale was “lurking” around his house, climbing his fences and taking photos of his children.

"This recollection of the accident is inaccurate," he said.
