The Foreign Office has advised people not to travel to Pakistan until further notice and has told Britons currently staying in the country to leave as soon as possible.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "In view of the security situation, travel to Pakistan should, until further notice, be avoided, unless there are compelling reasons for it.

"British nationals now in Pakistan will wish to consider whether it is necessary for them to stay. Those still in the North West Frontier Province, Baluchistan and the northern areas are strongly advised to leave.

Dependents of British staff in diplomatic posts in Pakistan as well as some non-essential personnel are also going to leave the region.
