New leader Kim Jong-un ordered troops along the border with South Korea to be on high alert yesterday as he visited the demilitarised zone between the two countries.

Mr Kim's visit to the village of Panmunjom came amid escalating militaristic rhetoric just a week after Pyongyang agreed to freeze nuclear efforts in return for food aid. Tens of thousands of North Koreans rallied in Pyongyang, vowing to topple the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who ended aid to the North in 2008.
