A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeastern Japan yesterday in the same region hit by last year's tsunami.

A quake measuring 6.8 first struck the southern coast of Hokkaido island in the evening, causing a small tsunami. Three hours later, a 6.1-magnitude quake shook buildings in the capital, causing air and rail services to be suspended.

It was centred just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, 15km below the sea surface.
