Shot schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai moved to army hospital

A schoolgirl who was shot in the head and neck by the Taliban has been transferred to a specialist hospital with better facilities in the army garrison town of Rawalpindi.

Malala Yousafzai, 14, was in a critical condition and still unconscious yesterday, but doctors said she had moved her arms and legs slightly the night before. Surgeons removed a bullet from Malala on Wednesday.

She was shot as she returned home from school in Mingora, in north-western Swat, on Tuesday. She has been campaigning for three years for girls' right to have an education and had become a national hero. A Taliban spokesman said Malala was targeted for trying to spread Western culture and that they would try to kill her again if she survived.

The shooting has drawn con-demnation from world leaders and there have been widespread protests in Pakistan.
