A four-year-old British boy has died after drowning in a swimming pool at a holiday villa where he was staying with his family.

The boy died at around 9pm on Sunday at a house in Mijas on the Costa Del Sol, a spokesman for Ayuntamiento de Mijas, the area’s local authority, confirmed.

Around 20 people were present at the property when the child drowned, officials have said.

The boy is believed to have been fallen into the pool while playing with other children during a gathering hosted by his parents at the villa, according to the Telegraph.

One of the parents attempted to revive the child before paramedics reached the scene.

Emergency services arrived at the property soon after but the child was unable to be saved and pronounced dead at the scene.

Mijas is a residential area a short distance away from La Cala de Mijas. Situated on the coast between Marbella and Fuengirola, it is a popular destination for British tourists and expats.

An investigating judge is currently in charge of a routine investigation into the incident and a post-mortem was due to take place this morning in Malaga, according to reports.
