Greece's extreme-right Golden Dawn party has denied its supporters were behind an attack on a 31-year-old Pakistani migrant in Athens.

Police said in a statement that the attackers were part of a "motorised march ... that originated at the offices of a certain political party".

Police added that they prevented the marchers from attacking more migrants.

Golden Dawn said that its supporters were "kilometres away from where the incident took place," and accused the police of partiality and "interfering with our pre-election campaign".

Police briefly detained, then released, six people after the attack, including the daughter of party leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos.

The migrant was treated in hospital for his injuries.

Golden Dawn won 7% of the vote in the May 6 election.
