Protesters have forced their way into a government building in Athens and threatened a minister, as riot police intervened with batons, pepper spray and tear gas to expel them.

One person was taken to hospital after scuffles inside and in front of the labour ministry building, while at least two others collapsed from the effects of pepper spray.

The protest was organised by a Communist-backed union. The government said damage was caused in the office of the minister, Yiannis Vroutsis. More than 30 protesters were detained.
