Pro-EU demonstrators packed the Independence Square as Germany's foreign minister met Ukrainian opposition leaders at their protest camp in Kiev in a snub to President Viktor Yanukovich, who triggered mass street demonstrations by spurning a pact with the EU and seeking closer ties with Moscow. The crisis took a further toll on Ukraine's fragile economy, with the central bank forced to support the currency and the cost of insuring the country's debt against default rising further.

The parliament in Kiev had to abort its session after opposition deputies occupied the speaker's tribune, while thousands of anti-government protesters braved freezing temperatures and continued to block key government buildings, calling for the cabinet's resignation. The standoff between the opposition and the government in Ukraine continues as Russia warned the West not to interfere in the country's domestic affairs.
