An Italian priest who allegedly knocked a teenage boy off his scooter before fleeing the scene later appeared to have a crisis of conscience after asking about the boy at a hospital and then handing himself in to police.

The 17-year-old boy was riding his scooter in Ravenna, northern Italy, when he was allegedly hit by a priest driving a Volkswagen Golf on Saturday, The Local has reported.

The priest is then understood to have driven off while passerbys alerted emergency services.

A few hours later, the priest then reportedly drove to the hospital to find out the boy’s condition. He suffered a few fractures but did not sustain any serious injuries, according to Il Resto del Carlino.

However, the he did not hand himself in until Tuesday evening after the search for the driver involved "intensified".

The priest is now being investigated for failing to stop and assist the teenager, The Local has reported.
