A man has been rescued after he was trapped in a lift for three days in Sweden, it has been reported.

The 58-year-old man, who has not been named, was rushed to hospital after he apparently spent the entire weekend stuck in the lift.

After getting trapped on Friday evening in Alby, south of Stockholm, it was only on Monday morning someone raised the alarm.

"After a while we were able to get the lift open and then he wasn't contactable, but later he was able to say that he had been stuck since Friday and that he was thirsty," Roger Magnusson, a spokesperson for the local fire service, told the TT newswire.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for exhaustion but his current state of health has not been disclosed.

There was an unspecified failure with the lift which had gone unnoticed over the weekend, the emergency services said.

Alby is a suburb in the Botkyrka municipality within Stockholm and has a population of approximately 10,000.

The Alby Centre, where the incident is thought to have taken place, was last renovated in 2000.
