Militant jailed for 1977 attack

A former member of the Red Army Faction has been jailed for four years as an accessory to the murder of West Germany's chief federal prosecutor in 1977, one of the leftist terror group's most notorious killings.

Verena Becker, 59, went on trial in September 2010, accused of playing a role in the ambush of Siegfried Buback, his driver and a bodyguard, who were all killed. They were shot by the pillion passenger on a motorbike while their car was stopped at a traffic light.

Judge Hermann Wieland said Becker supported and "knowingly and deliberately" influenced the perpetrators but it was not possible to prove that she was involved in carrying out the killings.
