Zelyoniy the cat really does have nine lives after he survived a vicious attack that left him with a kitchen knife embedded in his head.

The feline was found by a local woman on Sunday, who noticed him on the streets of the Crimean city of Sevastopol with the utensil lodged in his skull. He was quickly rushed to a vet, who surgically removed the kitchen implement.

Footage shows the moment the knife was extracted, which appears to have been buried a several inches deep.

Lyudmila Alexeeva, who rescued Zelyoniy told 9news, “When I went to look for him I found him hiding under a bush and was shocked to see a knife sticking out of his head even though he was still alive.”

According to the authorities, Zelyoniy was stabbed on Friday 13 but it was two days before he was found.

“The knife was wedged in the skull and the cat had probably run off before its attacker could remove the blade,” Natalia Morozova, president of the Sevastopol charity fund for homeless animals told news.com.

Zelyoniy, known as “Green” in English, is expected to make a full recovery but remains withdrawn following the incident.

It is still not known who attacked him.
