Archbishop Desmond Tutu and two other Nobel Peace Prize laureates are contesting the awarding of this year's prize to the European Union, saying the 27-nation bloc contradicts the values associated with it.

Dr Tutu of South Africa, Northern Ireland's Mairead Maguire and Adolfo Perez Esquivel from Argentina are demanding that the prize, worth £750,000, should not be paid out this year.

In an open letter to the Nobel Foundation, they say the EU is "not one of the 'champions of peace' Alfred Nobel had in mind" when he created the prize, to be presented in Oslo this month.
