Package disarmed at Angela Merkel's office in Berlin

Angela Merkel's spokesman says that a suspicious package intercepted in the mailroom of her office was personally addressed to the German chancellor and "would have been able to harm people."

Steffen Seibert said that police were able to disarm the package that arrived at the chancellory midday today. He refused to give any further details.

German media have reported the package carried a Greek return address.

The package in Berlin came hours after small mail bombs exploded outside the Russian and Swiss embassies in Athens in attacks blamed on far-left domestic extremists

Greek police destroyed at least three more suspected bombs in Athens.
