The Pope's former butler, Paolo Gabriele, was ordered to stand trial yesterday on charges of aggravated theft, in connection with the leaking of documents. For the first time, the Vatican revealed that a second man was accused of being involved.

The indictment said Mr Gabriele told prosecutors he had acted because he had seen "evil and corruption everywhere in the Church". Mr Gabriele also said he was acting as an agent of the Holy Spirit.

A computer expert, Claudio Sciarpelletti, was facing lesser charges of aiding and abetting a crime.
