LONDON (Reuter) - The Queen gave General Colin Powell an honorary knightood yesterday, in recognition of his contribution to British-US relations and his role in the Gulf War.

The Foreign Office said that the American general had been appointed an Honorary Knight Commander in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath. Gen Powell, who also retired as chairman of the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff yesterday, is the first black American to receive an honorary knighthood from Britain. He will not be able to call himself General Sir Colin, but he will be allowed to put 'KCB' after his name.
