Mount Etna erupted for the 16th time this year on late Saturday and Sunday morning sending plumes of ash and streams of lava high into the sky over much of eastern Sicily.
The airport in nearby Catania said two air space sectors above the volcano were closed to flights, but the airport itself was operating normally.
Etna is Europe's largest and most active volcano. The eruption lasted about five hours.
Several inhabited villages around mountain's slopes, but there were no reports or evacuation or damage.
