Emir Spahic video: Bayer Leverkusen defender facing police investigation after appearing to headbutt a steward after defeat to Bayern

German defender involved in an ugly confrontation after quarter-final defeat

Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Emir Spahic will be investigated by German police after being involved in a confrontation with stewards after their cup defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

The Bosnian international, 34, appeared to headbutt one of the stewards after getting involved in an incident at the BayArena after losing 5-3 on penalties in the DFB-Pokal Cup.

Video captured by a fan was acquired by newspaper Bild showing the defender having to be restrained by pitchside staff - it is reported that the stewards stopped his friends walking from one side of the stadium to the other.

Bayer confirmed they have passed their findings of the incident to the public prosecutor in Cologne, and an investigation is pending. The club confirmed that Spahic is set to issue an apology for the incident.

A Bayer spokesman said: "It is clear that there has been a physical dispute after the final whistle. We will review the incident and try to clarify now who was there and why they were there."

In the video Spahic is seen being restrained by a staff as other people - believed to be part of his entourage - clash with stewards, throwing punches.

After breaking free, the defender marches towards another steward and then throws his head forward and pushes him.

Bayer were also fined €20,000 for unsporting behaviour for a banner the fans displayed against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
