Mario Balotelli could face FA action after being caught on video appearing to give Manchester United fans the finger in response to them goading him after Liverpool's 2-1 defeat by United on Sunday.

The Italian striker was hit with chants of "City reject" and "What a waste of money" as he left Anfield following the loss, passing the away United fans, who had to stay at the ground after the final whistle to ease the crowd congestion.

He then filmed the fans on his iPhone before appearing to make an offensive gesture in their direction.

Had it not been for some Liverpool fans, Balotelli could have been sent off in the game. The combustible forward clashed with United defender Chris Smalling after being forced into the advertising boards, and was restrained by supporters at Anfield. He was already on a yellow card at the time.

The 24-year-old had only come on after 66 minutes in the game, replacing Alberto Moreno.

The Liverpool striker has failed to impress at Anfield since his £16m move from AC Milan last summer, scoring only four goals in 21 appearances.
