STEVE YOUNG, the San Francisco quarterback, has been named Player of the Year. Young led the NFL in passing for 3,465 yards and 25 touchdowns. He took the 49ers to the NFC West championship with a 14-2 record, though they lost in the play-offs to Dallas.
