England took silver in the team event as Malaysia won a controversial final 3-1.
Wee Kiong Tan and Wei Shem Goh benefited from a dubious line call at a critical stage of the pivotal men’s doubles rubber.
The crowd booed when big-screen replays proved the error but the umpire ignored protests and the Malaysians went on to beat Andy Ellis and Chris Adcock 21-19.
Table tennis: Silver again but Pitchford sees serious improvement
It was a repeat of the 2010 Delhi final as England’s men once again were forced to settle for silver when Singapore claimed team gold with a 3-1 victory. “It’s the same medal as four years ago but we’ve improved so much as a team,” said England’s Liam Pitchford. “We thought they looked shaky in their semi-final but they brought it together against us.”

Hockey: Reality check for England as Australians score three
England’s women were brought back down to earth after Sunday’s 5-0 defeat of Malaysia, losing their latest pool game 3-0 to unbeaten Australia yesterday.
Two strikes from Jodie Kenny and one from Emily Smith confirmed that Australia will once again be the team to beat following their gold medals at the last two Games.
England’s Georgie Twigg said: “They [Australia] have been playing so well recently, but I think we put in a really good performance out there. It’s disappointing to lose 3-0 but I think we’re really gaining momentum.”
