Afzaal and Morris pile on the pressure

Usman Afzaal and John Morris combined for a third-wicket partnership of 215 as Derbyshire posted a formidable 456 for 6 on the opening day of their County Championship Second Division match against Nottinghamshire at Derby.

Afzaal struck 138, while Morris was cruelly run out after making 170 as the pair piled on the runs. Afzaal's century came off 132 balls, while Morris needed 116 to reach his three figures.

In their First Division match at Taunton, Somerset had Andy Caddick to thank for restricting Glamorgan to a modest first-innings total of 169. The England fast bowler claimed 5 for 84 and then waited in the pavilion as the batsmen continued the good work.

Though Michael Trescothick could only manage 26 before he was caught, Michael Burns looked well on course for a century when he was adjudged lbw on 81. By this stage Somerset had raced to 193 for 3 from just 36 overs.

Having won the toss and electing to bat at Lord's, the home side Middlesex made most of their day in the middle, reaching a formidable 302 for 4 against Durham.

Andrew Strauss, the Middlesex opening batsman, was very much the star of the day before he surrendered his wicket with a few overs remaining.
