Jimmy Anderson was called up to England's squad for the Twenty20 series against South Africa yesterday. He will provide cover for Steve Finn, who is suffering from a stiff back.

The selectors have opted for Anderson's experience, although it is almost three years since he played a Twenty20 international. He is not in the squad for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka for which England leave next Thursday. Anderson has played in most of England's other matches this year – 10 of the 11 Tests and 13 of the 14 one-day internationals – and they will be anxious that he is fit and rested for the Test series in India in November.

Surrey will seek to bowl out Nottinghamshire for fewer than 346 at The Oval today to confirm their First Division survival, Worcestershire's relegation and almost certainly condemn Lancashire to the same fate only a year after winning the Championship.

There were half-centuries for Zander de Bruyn and Gary Wilson, in Surrey's 304 all out, before Neil Edwards and Harry Gurney survived one over before the close.

Five batsmen made half-centuries as Lancashire scored 448 in their first innings against Middlesex but the home side were 127 ahead at stumps with eight wickets in hand.

Yorkshire strengthened their position in the Second Division promotion race with an eight-wicket win over Glamorgan at Headingley but leaders Derbyshire face a tall task against fellow contenders Kent at Canterbury, where they have nine wickets in hand but need to score a further 374 to win.

Glamorgan's 42-year-old spinner Robert Croft has announced he will retire at the end of the season.
