Worcestershire foiled Surrey's bid for an improbable win at New Road after the visitors, who had been bowled out for 113 in their first innings, stacked up 431 for 7 following on.

After Kevin Pietersen's flurry of boundaries on Friday had set the tone against a Worcestershire attack weakened by an injury to Alan Richardson, Rory Hamilton-Brown and Tom Maynard turned their overnight half-centuries into hundreds in a stand of 225 for the fifth wicket built at five an over.

Hamilton-Brown, the captain, made 115, Maynard a career-best 143, both men having been out without scoring in the first innings.

The declaration left Worcestershire 52 overs to chase 260 to win. After George Edwards, a 19-year-old pace bowler making his Championship debut, had removed Michael Klinger and Vikram Solanki in the same over, Jon Lewis dismissed captain Daryl Mitchell to leave the home side 29 for 3. Worcestershire ended eight down, but defied Surrey's attempt to win a match following on for only the second time.

Ajmal Shahzad made an eventful debut for Lancashire after three washed-out days at Hove. Caught behind for a 12-ball duck before Lancashire declared at 144 for 8 as the sides played for bonus points alone, the England fast bowler released by Yorkshire took a wicket with his first ball for his new county as Ed Joyce was leg before, and dismissed both Luke Wells and Chris Nash in the same way to claim three in his first 13 deliveries.

Yorkshire pulled off an extraordinary win over Gloucestershire at Bristol, chasing down a target of 400 to prevail in 110 overs with 14 balls to spare after Phil Jaques hit 160 and Gary Ballance an unbeaten 121.
