County Championship round-up: Somerset left to toil once more by free-scoring Lyth

Batsman of the day

Adam Lyth continued his impressive form against Somerset with his first Championship hundred of the season after the weather relented to allow a start one day late to Yorkshire's match at Taunton.

The 25-year-old left-hander has hit a half-century in six of his nine appearances against the West Country side, twice going on to make a century. Today's 105, in which he survived a chance to third slip on 37, took his aggregate to 715 runs in first-class matches against Somerset at an average of 47.6.

Lyth shared a partnership of 103 with his captain, Andrew Gale, whose bid for a first Championship century in almost two years was frustrated again when he chopped on to Peter Trego for 75. Somerset, who were saved by the weather when they met Yorkshire at Leeds three weeks ago, have since lost to Middlesex and Sussex by wide margins and went into this match with six players missing through injury or international commitments.

Bowler of the day

Gloucestershire fielded a seam bowling quartet with an average age of less than 21 against Lancashire at the Aigburth ground in Liverpool, among them 20-year-old Graeme McCarter, who marked his second first-class match for the county with his first wickets, dismissing Andrea Agathangelou leg before wicket for 14 before having Karl Brown caught at first slip for one.

McCarter made his first-class debut in international cricket, representing Ireland against Namibia in the ICC Intercontinental Cup in 2011 as an 18-year-old.

Lancashire, who are without two top-order batsmen after Luke Procter joined Paul Horton on the injured list, recovered from 26 for 3 to 175 for 4 when rain forced an early finish, Simon Katich showing he had recovered fully from the blow on the temple that put him out of Lancashire's match against Hampshire last week by making an unbeaten 73.

Dirk Nannes, whose tally of 214 wickets in Twenty20 cricket is bettered only by Somerset's Alfonso Thomas (216), will not be able to add to it in this summer's Friends Life T20, having been ruled out of the competition by a stress fracture of the back suffered playing for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

The 37-year-old Australian left-arm seamer, who has played for Middlesex, Nottinghamshire and Surrey in England's domestic competition, had signed for Glamorgan, whose head of elite performance, Matthew Mott, said that a number of potential replacements had already been approached.

Nottinghamshire left-arm spinner Graeme White has rejoined Northamptonshire on a month's loan but will spend the period alternating between the counties. White has been named in the Notts squad to face Sussex at Hove this week, but will be free to play for his former county while Notts are playing Championship cricket at Trent Bridge, where spinners do not normally play a prominent role. Northants will have him for Twenty20 matches but not for the YB40 competition, in which he will represent Notts, because the two counties are in the same group.
