County Championship round-up: Twins rub salt in Surrey's wounds

If Surrey are the Manchester United of cricket, perhaps Chris Adams is modelling himself on Sir Alex Ferguson. Or maybe Phil Brown.

After Somerset scored 441 for 5 on the first day at The Oval, director of cricket Adams sat his Surrey players on the grass in front of the pavilion before addressing them on what they might do to put things right, leading mischievous observers to liken the scene to Brown's infamous on-field dressing down of his Hull City players when they were 4-0 down at half-time at Manchester City.

Somerset's dominance has not been checked, though. Surrey's bowling improved to claim two more bonus points but the visitors stacked up 512 for 9 before declaring, after 18-year-old twins Jamie and Craig Overton put on 38 for the last wicket.

Jamie, making his first-class debut, hit 34 from 35 balls, with seven boundaries, before claiming his maiden first-class wicket with his fifth ball when he uprooted Jacques Rudolph's leg-stump. Steve Davies led a fightback with a 113-ball century after being dropped on 74 but, after losing three wickets in 18 balls, Surrey finished on 286 for 6.

Monty Panesar was among the wickets for Sussex at New Road but Moeen Ali led a Worcestershire fightback in response to a Sussex total of 315 swelled by Steve Magoffin's 41 off 40 balls.

Former Australia batsman Simon Katich fell four runs short of a fifth career double hundred but with Michael Bates's maiden century Hampshire totalled 427 against Yorkshire.

The New Zealand batsman Martin Gupthill was dropped three times in making his second century of the season for Derbyshire against struggling Glamorgan at Derby, while the veteran seamer David Masters finished with six Leicestershire wickets for Essex at Grace Road.
