Kevin Pietersen raised concerns over the nature of his knee injury by posting a picture of himself in a knee-brace on his Instagram and Twitter accounts this morning.

The influential batsman had to withdraw from the England Test squad to fly home from New Zealand, as well as putting his IPL commitments on hold, to investigate the problem further with a scan. The diagnosis suggested that he would only be out of action for eight weeks, but the sombre looking photo may prompt fresh worries for Andy Flower.

The former captain also tweeted on his account @kevinpp24: "#kneebrace".

The England coach expressed his confidence that the talisman will be available for selection for the forthcoming Ashes series, giving much needed relief to fans and teammates who have endured a difficult series in New Zealand.

Flower said: “Kevin has had a further scan, which confirms a bone injury and bone bruising, and he is being put in a brace for two weeks. He will be off exercise, or any impact exercise, after that for another couple of weeks. Then he'll start his rehab."

Pietersen has had a mixed time of it after being welcomed back to the fold in October last year, but an impressive 186 against India in November highlighted his importance to the side. Provocative text messages about teammates had put question marks over his England career, but if injury ruled him out of the Ashes it would be a huge blow to captain Alastiar Cook.
