New Zealand were bowled out for 45 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their first Test against South Africa this morning.

The tourists had won the toss and the new Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum opted to bat, yet his side were all out before lunch.

Kane Williamson top scored with 13 for New Zealand, the only player to reach double figures.

South African bowler Vernon Philander was the star for the home side in Cape Town with one of the fastest five-wicket hauls in Test history.

Philander had 5-4 in just 4.1 overs before ending with 5-7.

45 is New Zealand's third lowest ever score, and the 12th lowest total of all time.

South Africa finished the day on 252-2.
