Nottinghamshire 205 Yorkshire 52-2: Yorkshire make profitable start before rain halts play

Yorkshire will be looking to capitalise on a fine bowling performance after having the better of day one against Nottinghamshire at Headingley yesterday.

The visitors appeared to be on shaky ground on 139 for 8 at one point before some impressive late hitting from Peter Siddle and Luke Fletcher guided Nottinghamshire to 205 all out.

Siddle then removed both Yorkshire openers in an impressive opening spell but when rain caused an early halt to proceedings, the home side were 52 for 2, trailing by 153 runs in the first innings of this County Championship First Division match.

With Liam Plunkett away with England and Ryan Sidebottom injured, Steven Patterson will be expected to step up for Yorkshire and the tall paceman had a wicket with just his second ball of the day as he bowled Alex Hales (12) on the drive after Nottinghamshire had won the toss.

Tim Bresnan, who finished with 3 for 43 off 16 overs, then got in on the act with the first ball of the next over as Adam Lyth did well to claim a low catch at second slip to remove Phil Jaques on 20. It left Nottinghamshire on 36 for 2 after a seemingly solid start.

The umpires changed the ball after 12 overs but that did not stop Jack Brooks, the right-arm medium-fast bowler, from having a good day. Brooks, who finished with 3 for 74, first trapped James Taylor lbw for just three runs and then removed Samit Patel for a duck as the all-rounder cut to Adil Rashid at backward point.

Brooks was at it again after lunch when Riki Wessels edged his delivery to Lyth for 24. Former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb then went for 45 as wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow caught him down the leg side off Bresnan.

Chris Read was run out on 30 by Jack Leaning in the next over and, when Bresnan trapped Ajmal Shahzad lbw for a duck, Nottinghamshire were 139 for 8.

Siddle and Fletcher then put on 65 for the ninth wicket before Bresnan caught the latter at long-on off Rashid.

The same combination removed Andre Adams for a duck two balls later to hand Yorkshire all three bowling points and leave Siddle unbeaten on 39 off just 35 balls including two sixes.

Siddle took Lyth’s scalp with just the second ball of the reply as the opener nicked the ball through to Read and the Australian then had Alex Lees caught by Read. Leaning , who finished the day on 23 not out and Andrew Gale (16 not out) steadied the ship before the players were brought off in the 17th over and the rain prevented them from returning.
