Round-Up: Borthwick’s magical spell sends Surrey into tailspin

Scott Borthwick’s three wickets put Durham in control against Surrey in the County Championship on a damp day three yesterday at The Oval.

Surrey finished the day on 164 for 6 in their second innings – a lead of just 115 runs – and the visitors were well on top before rain caused an early end to the day.

Spinner Borthwick trapped Rory Burns (38) and Zander de Bruyn (20) lbw before having top scorer Steven Davies caught at slip for 46 just before the close.

In the Yorkshire Bank 40, Somerset’s mammoth 338 for 5 helped them maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Jos Buttler smashed 89 from just 51 balls, and Alfonso Thomas (four for 41) was the pick of the bowlers as Yorkshire were bowled out for 207 with 10 overs remaining.

Yesterday, games were called off at Derbyshire, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire as rain spread, while games at Edinburgh and Worcester were restricted-over affairs.

Essex easily beat Scotland by 59 runs after 29 overs, as they reached 217 for 7 partly due to openers’ Tom Westley (63), and Mark Pettini (47). Scotland did not get close to the target, despite the best efforts of Preston Mommsen (70 not out) and Freddie Coleman (64).

Nottinghamshire beat Worcestershire by five wickets under the Duckworth/Lewis method. Notts’ batsman Alex Hales hit 72 for the visitors to set up victory but it was Chris Read and Steven Mullaney who saw them home.
