Durham have continued their enterprising start to the season in Division Two with two more surprising individual performances. Against Somerset at Stockton - hosting its first Championship game for two years - Paul Collingwood took his first- ever five-wicket haul on Friday. Durham have continued their enterprising start to the season in Division Two with two more surprising individual performances. Against Somerset at Stockton - hosting its first Championship game for two years - Paul Collingwood took his first- ever five-wicket haul on Friday. Durham then struggled to 141 for 7 in reply to 252.

But a rampant Andrew Caddick was foiled yesterday as the 20-year-old paceman Liam Plunkett made 74 not out, a career best, and Mark Davies also made a personal best of 62. They put on 124 for the ninth wicket, three short of the county record, as Durham reached 298 for a lead of 46.

Then Marcus Trescothick fell cheaply yet again, to his England colleague Stephen Harmison, and the fast bowler took 2 for 17 in 11 overs as the visitors stumbled to 88 for 3. The Sri Lankan veteran Sanath Jayasuriya, like Trescothick, is enduring a calamitous start to the season, and became the latest of Collingwood's victims as England's utility player pushes his all-round credentials in a bid to fulfil his dream of playing in the Ashes.

In the battle of the bottom clubs in Division One, Glamorgan are facing the prospect of three defeats in their first three games. Gloucestershire posted 466 at Sophia Gardens and made the hosts follow on after dismissing them for 239.

Four wickets fell for eight runs as three top-order batsmen went for ducks, medium- pacer Alex Gidman causing havoc with a career-best haul of 4 for 47. The Sri Lankan leg- spinner Upul Chandana found some unlikely early-season turn in the Principality as he returned 3 for 73. The Welsh county fared better second time around, making 93 for 1.

Essex, second in the lower flight, compiled 362 in reply to Leicestershire's 220 at Chelmsford, Will Jefferson top-scoring with 93. Recalled veteran Phil DeFreitas took 3 for 68 and Ottis Gibson picked up 3 for 118. Leicestershire had reached 57 for 1 by the close, 85 runs in arrears.

After a lengthy delay, Lancashire made 175 for 1 against Derbyshire at Old Trafford with Mal Loye on 91 not out and Mark Chilton scoring 50.

A Warwickshire player will appear before an England and Wales Cricket Board disciplinary panel later this week after testing positive for a recreational drug during the Champions' first game of the season, against Glamorgan at Edgbaston last month.

Warwickshire's Graham Wagg was given a 15-month ban at the end of last season after testing positive for cocaine, and was sacked.
