South Africa 328 & 265 dec India 240 & 38-2: India facing tough task on final day

India reached 38 for 2 at stumps on day four here yesterday after being set 354 to win the second Test against South Africa.

Makhaya Ntini had Virender Sehwag (8) caught by Graeme Smith at slip and Rahul Dravid (5) caught by Mark Boucher before bad light stopped play for the fourth straight day. Ntini took 2 for 14 off six overs. India need another 316 to win. Wasim Jaffer, on 22, and Sachin Tendulkar, 0, were not out at stumps.

South Africa had declared at 265 for 8 after Shaun Pollock had hit 10 fours in his 63 not out and shared in stands of 70 with Andrew Hall (21) and 52 with Morne Morkel (27).

Earlier, a good start by Smith and A B de Villiers was undone by six quick wickets before lunch as South Africa collapsed from 99 for 0 to 143 for 6. Resuming on 64 for 0, Smith and De Villiers were one run short of a 100-opening partnership before De Villiers was caught for 47 by V V S Laxman at second slip off Vikram Singh.

Hashim Amla (0) was out leg-before to Sree Sreesanth, who bowled Smith for 59 and had Ashwell Prince (0) caught by Sourav Ganguly three balls later to leave South Africa on 121 for 4. Herschelle Gibbs was caught by substitute fielder Dinesh Karthik for nine off Anil Kumble. Zaheer Khan had Mark Boucher lbw for 8. Sreesanth was the pick of India's bowlers with 4 for 80.

The tourists lead the three-Test series 1-0.
