Who said putting pressure on a defender, even when their team's calmly in possession of the ball, was never worth doing?

As Europe starts to savour the continent's most prestigious tournament - the Champions League, Asia is enjoying its own version of the event, the obviously-titled Asian Champions League.

Yet there definitely appears to be a gap in quality between the two similarly-named competitions - especially if Joshua Rose's own goal is anything to go by.

The Central Coast Mariners defender was put under pressure by Guangzhou R and F during a AFC Champions League playoff, with Rose deciding to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper from just inside his own half.

However, his back pass from near the halfway line is hit too hard and way to the left of the waiting keeper, who was several yards out of their area.

The keeper attempts in vain to rush back and stop the ball before it hits the back of the net, yet the ball is travelling far too fast for him to even have a chance of averting disaster. The 40-yard back pass becomes a 40-yard own goal.

The Mariners were already losing the match 2-0 and Rose's goal secured the match for Guangzhou. Substitute Glen Trifiro did pull a goal back for the side in the final few minutes, perhaps raising the question of whether Rose's goal pushed the game beyond the Mariners' reach.
