Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has joked that he had "no choice" other than handing Anthony Martial his first United start against PSV in the Champions League tonight.

The 19-year-old was signed in a massive £58m deal last week, and scored on his debut for the club on Saturday, coming on as substitute in United's 3-1 win over Liverpool.

With Wayne Rooney out with a hamstring injury, Van Gaal insisted that he "did not have any other choice" but to start the teenager (watch video below).

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said before the game: "We have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches at the highest level in my opinion - that is the challenge for us now."

"Last year we were fourth in the Premier League and because of that we qualified for the Champions League, but now we have to show we can play at this level. I don't know if we can, I have to wait and see."
