Bayern Munich are confident that Pep Guardiola will extend his contract with the club, despite the Spaniard being targeted by the Football Association as a replacement for England manager Roy Hodgson.

Karl Heinz-Rummenigge, the club's chief executive, has told the press in Germany that he expects the former Barcelona coach to stay on in Bavaria next summer, when his current contract expires.

"One thing is clear: we have a good team. And a good team needs a good coach," Rummenigge said in an interview with news agency DPA.

"I am definitely optimistic that Pep will stay beyond June 30, 2016," he continued. "We have a first-class team, a fantastic club, a great stadium and a wonderful city to offer.

“We will have a serious conversation with Pep in the upcoming weeks and we will see what comes from that."

However, according to The Sun, Guardiola tops the FA's list of candidates should Hodgson leave the role following the European Championships in France.

The England manager's future is currently uncertain with his contract set to expire in July. FA chief executive Martin Glenn wishes to postpone talks over a new deal for the 68-year-old until after the tournament next summer, taking into account his side's performance.

If English football's governing body were to approach Guardiola, it is suggested that they would offer him a salary of as much as £10m-a-year to take on the infamous 'impossible job'.

The FA previously spurned the chance to install Guardiola as England manager, despite the Spaniard seeking an interview for the job.

David Bernstein, then the FA chairman, was determined to appoint an Englishman and did not take up the opportunity.
