Real Sociedad have sacked Jagoba Arrasate following a disappointing start to the campaign that has left the club in the Primera Division drop zone.

The Basque club have won just one of their opening 10 league fixtures, while they were eliminated from the Europa League before the group stages following a humiliating defeat to Russian side Krasnodar in August.

Former Manchester United boss David Moyes has been linked with the post.

Arrasate failed to win a single game in September and October and it appears a 1-0 home defeat to Malaga on Saturday was the final straw for the Sociedad board.

"Real Sociedad have decided to relieve Jagoba Arrasate of his duties as first-team coach," said a statement on the club's official website.

Arrasate joined Sociedad as their youth coach in 2010 before becoming assistant to Philippe Montanier two years later and then took the top job when the Frenchman left to coach Rennes last May.

He led the team to a seventh-place finish last season and in April this year his contract was extended to 2016 yet he has ultimately paid the price for a woeful start to this campaign.

Moyes has been out of work since losing his job at Old Trafford in April after less than a season in charge.

Reports in Spain have also linked former West Brom coach Pepe Mel with the vacancy.
