Dnipro 1 Tottenham 0: Tim Sherwood guarantees Spurs 'will score at the Lane' after Europa League defeat in Ukraine

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood has promised his side will deliver the goods next week when they welcome Dnipro to White Hart Lane, having lost to them in Ukraine on Thursday night.

A late penalty from Yevhen Konoplyanka, a reported target for Spurs and a player who just missed out on a January move to Liverpool, gave Dnipro and former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos a 1-0 first-leg lead in their last-32 tie.

The home fans sang the Ukrainian national anthem during the minute's silence before kick-off - although many stayed away altogether - while the players wore black armbands in memory of those who have died during the political protests in capital Kiev.

In a game where both teams looked to attack and gain the upper hand, it was surprising the match was decided so late on and by such a slim margin.

Roberto Soldado was guilty of a bad miss early in the second half which would have put Spurs in front and given them an away goal, but Sherwood remains confident his side can progress to the next round.

"We will score at the Lane, guaranteed," he said.

"But it depends how many we will have to score. We could have played better. I didn't think we were very poor, but the disappointment is that we never scored and we had some good opportunities to do that."

Sherwood also questioned the quality of the pitch at the Dnipro Arena, with UEFA having blocked Tottenham from training there when they arrived on Wednesday, and claimed it paid a part in Soldado's miss as the Spain striker blazed over from close range.

"He would expect to score," Sherwood said of Soldado's chance.

"I haven't seen it again, but I'm not sure he will be too complimentary about the pitch.

"The pitch was a disgrace. It is no excuse as both teams had to play on it, but it is possibly the worst pitch I have experienced in a long time."

Sherwood, who has always distanced the club from a move for Konoplyanka, felt his players handled the tricky winger well for much of the evening.

"I think he did well after he scored," Sherwood added.

"Kyle Naughton did very good job on him. After he scored he got confident and made some very good runs.

"It would have been a better result if we were to score. We had opportunities to score but so did they. Credit them they had threats and will have threats."

Ramos' evening could have been even better as Dnipro came close to adding a late second and is looking forward to returning to White Hart Lane.

"I must say that the match showed that both teams would do their best to win," he said.

"We were pretty close to scoring the second goal which would be great help for us in London, but still I have nothing but thanks to the players for what they did.

"2-0 would have been really great for us. But we have 1-0 and we are looking forward to the second leg and will do our best there."
