Real Madrid wasted little time in restoring their one-point advantage over Barcelona at the top of La Liga last night as they raced into a 2-0 lead over Atletico in the first 19 minutes of the Madrid derby at the Bernabeu.

Ricardo Carvalho put Jose Mourinho's side ahead in the 13th minute with a rare goal from the centre-half and Mehmet Ozil made it two when his curling free-kick from wide on the right crept in at the far post.

Atletico were in danger of being overwhelmed but fought back without ever looking like they could save the game, Ozil almost adding a third in the second half from a Real counter-attack.

Lionel Messi was again the star as Barcelona won 3-1 at midtable Getafe. He put the champions ahead in the 23rd minute with a near-post finish and Messi's subtle lay-off then created the second for David Villa. Pedro grabbed the third after Barça pressured the home defence into a mistake in the 65th minute.

Gerard Pique earned his second yellow card and was sent off for handling the ball in the penalty area soon after, Manu del Moral scoring from the spot. With the visitors unsettled, Getafe pressed forward but a red card for midfielder Derek Boateng took the wind out of their sails and Barça could have scored again in the final minutes.

Leaders Lazio slumped to only their second Serie A defeat of the season as two penalties gave Roma a 2-0 win in the Rome derby, Marco Borriello and Mirko Vucinic scoring from the spot in a game which only burst into life after the break.

Lazio's first league defeat since the opening day meant Milan cut the gap to two points and leapfrogged champions Internazionale into second place with a 3-2 win at bottom side Bari. Massimo Ambrosini, Mathieu Flamini and Alexandre Pato got Milan's goals.
