Luke Shaw will not return to Holland with Manchester United this week, one year on from his horrific leg-break in Eindhoven.

United to go Rotterdam to play Feyenoord in their first Europa League group game, but left-back Shaw is unlikely to make the trip. He picked up a hamstring strain in United’s 2-1 Manchester derby defeat to City on Saturday afternoon. Jose Mourinho is set pick Argentina international Marcos Rojo for his first start of the season instead.

Shaw had his leg broken when United played at PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League group stage last September, in just his eighth United appearance in his second season since his move from Southampton in the summer of 2014. His leg was broken by a bad tackle by Mexico international Hector Moreno which went surprisingly unpunished by the referee.

Shaw took all season to recover from the injury, denying Louis van Gaal’s United side one of their most important attacking threats in wide areas. He missed out on being part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for Euro 2016, as Danny Rose played at left-back for England instead.

Shaw made his first-team return as United won the Community Shield on 7 August, almost 11 months after his injury. Since then he has played all four Premier League games for United.

The absence of Shaw will be one of a number of changes for Mourinho’s first Europa League game in charge of United.

Teenage sensation Marcus Rashford will make his first Manchester United start of the season, after impressing as a substitute again on Saturday, while Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling are also set to start. Mourinho is weighing up whether to start Memphis Depay against his former club.
