Manchester City have been eliminated from the Champions League after suffering a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Barcelona.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg defeat at home, Manuel Pellegrini's side travelled to Camp Nou hoping that Joe Hart's late penalty save at the Etihad could provide the lifeline needed to progress to the quarter-finals.

But if victory in Barcelona was not a tall enough task, it became even more daunting following Ivan Rakitic's glorious first half strike.

But could anyone equal Hart? Click through our player ratings gallery below...

Having collected a sweeping ball from Lionel Messi, the Croatian was coolness personified to cushion it with Hart's imposing frame closing in, before elegantly dinking an effort over the England No1, brushing the crossbar on it's way in. The technique was velvet soft, and this was vintage Barcelona.

In truth, the margin could have been greater, but for the efforts of Hart and the sturdiness of his goalframe. Neymar, Suarez and Messi all struck the woodwork during the 90 minutes, while Hart continued his form from the first leg deny all three on further occasions.

Defeat comes as another blow to Pellegrini who, having seen his side fall further behind in the Premier League title race following defeat at Burnley, has come up short on Europe's grand stage once again.
