Rio Ferdinand branded Manchester United a "team of strangers" after they crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Sevilla.

Two goals from substitute Wissam Ben Yedder saw United punished for their negative set-up with manager Jose Mourinho and new signing Alexis Sanchez taking the brunt of the post-match criticism.

Former United defender Ferdinand was very disappointed with what he saw at Old Trafford and what he believed to be a lack of adventure from the home side.

"Terrible," he said when asked for his thoughts on the performance. "They looked like a team thrown together full of strangers. They went out there and played nervously and cautiously, you’ve got to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

"They gave nothing for the fans to cheer about. Top teams don’t pick and choose when they play. They are consistently good."

Former teammate Scholes singled out January arrival Sanchez for criticism and believes the 29-year-old should be dropped if he continues to underperform.

“Rashford was frightening on that left side on Saturday, but he moved him to bring Sanchez into what he thinks is his best position,” he said.

“[Sanchez] gave the ball away so often and his manager has to see that in the 10 games he has played, he has not been good.”

Scholes also criticised United’s all-round performance, accusing Mourinho’s players of lacking desire and energy.

“It's difficult to describe how bad that was,” he said. “Lethargic, bad attitude… [Mourinho] said in his interview he was happy with their attitude, but he has to be protecting his players.

“The players have let him down tonight by being so mediocre against a poor team. You are going for a place in the Champions League quarter final and there was no desire, heavy legs.

Scholes added: “It was poor. You can accept an off night if the attitude is right, but it wasn't.”

Mourinho for his part attempted to downplay the result by surprisingly bringing up the last-16 exits he masterminded from the away dugout at Old Trafford.

"I told you yesterday that it would be disappointment if we would lose the match," he said. "I don't want to make a drama of it, we don't have time. We have a match on Saturday, we have no time to be sad for more than 24 hours and that's football. That's not the end of the world.

"I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and I knock out Man United at home at Old Trafford. I sit in this chair with Porto, Man United out. I sit in this chair with Real Madrid, Man United out.

"So, I don't think it is something new for the club and of course being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment."
