Manchester United v Bayern Munich: Is 1-1 a good scoreline for David Moyes to take to Allianz Arena?

The evidence is conflicting

Manchester United surprised many with their performance against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford last night.

With the favourites to win this season's Champions League arriving at the soon-to-be-disposed champions of England, many expected David Moyes' side to take a battering and suffer yet another home defeat to add to the many their fans have seen already this season.

However, Nemanja Vidic gave Manchester United the lead before Bastian Schweinsteiger struck an equaliser for the visitors. Finishing at 1-1, the tie is poised delicately before next week's second-leg at the Allianz Arena.

But will Bayern's away goal prove crucial and what are United's chance of reaching the semi-finals? The evidence is conflicting.

In all European Cup history, after the first-leg was drawn 1-1, the away team in the second-leg has progressed 74.5 per cent of the time. On that basis, last night's result looks a good one for Manchester United.

However, in the 11 first-legs in which Bayern Munich have drawn 1-1, the German side have gone on to progress in EVERY single one of them. Ominous.

Speaking after last night's match Bayern manager Pep Guardiola admitted the result at Old Trafford wasn't ideal for his team, but sounded confident his side would progress.

"It is always dangerous when you go into the second leg with a 1-1 draw, but even a 2-1 victory would have been dangerous. We will try to win the second leg and I am sure we can do it. I have full confidence in my players and hope the fans in Munich will push us like the United supporters did for their team today."

The 1-1 scoreline means that Manchester United must score at the Allianz Arena. The teams meet again next Wednesday.
