Paris terror attack: Italian football clubs Livorno and Vicenza show support for France by playing national anthem before match

Two Italian football clubs have shown their unity to the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks by playing the French national anthem before their Serie B match on Saturday.

A number of football matches across Europe held a minute’s silence before kick-off, including all of the Football League fixtures as well as the Unicef charity match organised by David Beckham at Old Trafford.

In the latest tribute to be put on social media, players of Italian Serie B clubs Livorno and Vicenza lined up to pay their respects while the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, was played over the stadium’s tannoy.

A large Tricolore flag was displayed in front of the players, and fans in the stands clapped along to the anthem before applauding at the end of it.

All professional sporting events in France over this weekend were postponed over safety fears after French president Francois Hollande declared a state of emergency and three days of mourning.

The attacks have shocked the world after at least 127 people were killed by eight gunmen, with Isis currently claiming responsibility for the murders. Seven of the eight gunmen died after triggering suicide bombs, while the eighth was fatally shot by police following a raid on the Bataclan theatre that had been held under siege by three of the terrorists.

It has since been announced that the French national football team, who were targeted in an explosion at the Stade de France where they were playing Germany on Friday night, will play their international friendly against England on Tuesday evening at Wembley.

The French Football Federation is determined to use the match as a show of solidarity, and after holding talks with the English Football Association, decided that the best course of action would be to go ahead with the fixture as planned.
