Tottenham fans were attacked “with bricks and bottles” in a bar Brussels last night leaving several injured.

The supporters were in Belgium for their team’s Europa League tie against Anderlecht tonight. Security will be stepped up ahead of the game following the incident.

Eyewitnesses said more than 50 attackers ambushed the Spurs fans, who numbered about 50, as they drank in Bar BQ, a pub in a quiet square close to Brussels’ main railway station.

Rival supporters then fought in the streets after the initial attack, which left a window and many glasses smashed.

Tottenham supporter Sion Roberts wrote on Twitter: “Spurs fans have just been attacked in a pub.

“Few with some bad cuts, lots of blood! ‘Spurs fans all in a pub, out of nowhere 50+ come running up the road throwing glass, chairs the lot. Absolute carnage!

“No singing just having a quiet drink. Disgraceful from the Belgians!”

In 1984, a Spurs fan was shot dead before these clubs contested the first leg of the Uefa Cup Final in Brussels.

A manager of one several hotels located there told The Sun: “Tottenham fans had been drinking there for most of the day and were no trouble at all.

“It was definitely the Anderlecht supporters who caused all the trouble. They turned up wanting a fight.”

This is not the first time in recent years that Tottenham fans have encountered problems on European trips. During the 2012-13 season, some were attacked in Rome and Lyon. There has been little trouble since, however.

One eyewitness told The Daily Star: “They were kicking and punching and throwing bricks and bottles. It was definitely a premeditated attack.”
