Capital One Cup round-up: Norwich dumped by lowly Shrewsbury

A look at all the third-round action

League Two Shrewsbury Town shocked Championship side Norwich 1-0 to make the fourth round. Micky Mellon’s side won at Premier League Leicester in the previous round and continued their unlikely progress.

James Collins headed the only goal of the game from close range at New Meadow to hand Neil Adams’ side – currently second in the Championship – a first defeat in nine matches and take the Shrews into the fourth round for the first time in 28 years.

Last season’s finalists, Sunderland, fell at the third-round stage, losing 2-1 at home to Stoke. Former Barcelona trainee Marc Muniesa scored in either half after Jozy Altidore put the hosts ahead.

Managerless Cardiff’s woes continued as they were surprised 3-0 at home by fellow Championship side Bournemouth. The 2012 finalists, without a coach since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure last week, went down to three first-half goals, Dan Gosling scoring twice either side of Charlie Daniels’ effort.

Two late goals earned Derby a 2-0 victory over Reading to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches. Johnny Russell broke the deadlock midway through the second half before Alex Pearce’s own goal confirmed progression for Steve McClaren’s side.

Benik Afobe took his cup tally to five goals in three matches as his double beat Bradford 2-0 to take MK Dons into the fourth round for the first time in their short history. The on-loan Arsenal forward found the net in previous rounds against Wimbledon and Manchester United.
